Dear Friend,

I have decided to run this fall for another term on the Santa Monica City Council and I need you help. I enjoy my work as a City Council Member, but more important I believe that this coming term will be critical for the future of Santa Monica. Many of you have urged me to continue on the council. Several of you have said that my twenty years as a council member have given me a wealth of knowledge and experience to guide me in making better decisions for our city. My decisions have always bee based on what's best for Santa Monica and our residents.

During the past four years working with Mayor Bobby Shriver and the council, great progress has been made on the problem of homelessness. Two programs are especially successful. :

  • "Housing First" which moves homeless people into housing linked to social services is in place and showing good results.
  • Return Home vouchers to send people home-when they want to go, their family agrees, and social services in their home town are in place to assist them are working. We have reunited hundreds of homeless people with their families.

Two major issues will dominate our city for the next four years; planning for the arrival of the Light Rail in Santa Monica and determining the future of Santa Monica Airport. I believe my experience and common sense will be valuable in both these areas.

This fall you will elect five Council Members. Three will be elected to four-year terms and two will be elected to two-year terms. Santa Monica politics was once described as a political thicket, and the fall that is an understatement.

Santa Monica is a unique city and a tough place to get elected, especially for an independent candidate. Seventy-five percent of our voters live in multi-unit housing. Because most of these buildings have security doors, it is impossible to get in to walk from door to door to talk to voters and hand out material. It costs about $20,000 to do one mailer in Santa Monica; in my 2006 campaign I was luck enough to get three mailers.

Please help be by giving what you can, signing up for a lawn sign, hosting a coffee, or volunteering to help. Your endorsement is also important. Santa Monica has the lowest contribution limit of any city I know. No one can donate more than $250, and this limit makes it extremely difficult to finance a campaign.

I want to continue to serve as your council member and finish the work I have begun to improve the quality of life of all Santa Monicans.

Thank you for whatever you can give. Bob
